  1. Question

    David Humphrey

I purchased a new PSS10H/A from a Honda dealer here in the Denver, Colorado area about 12 years ago. I needed to power a water pump which is 600 feet below the surface of the ground and required a generator that produced at least 10KW so as not to burn the pump due to lack pf sufficient power. The generator is in a remote location with no commercial power available. Until last fall the generator, which has less than 80 hours of use, has performed as well as expected considering the 8500 foot altitude and is propane powered. The generator receives fuel after going through two regulators, the one mounted in the unit and one on the propane supply. I removed the outlet hose from the regulator and discovered that there was no fuel coming out of the outlet. I know that vacuum form the engine is required to allow fuel to flow through and exit the regulator. That is not happening. If I bypass the regulator that is built into the unit and attach the regulator from the supply tank, is there some feature that will prevent the fuel from getting to the carburetor? I have considered modifying the Honda engine to operate on gasoline because I loose power due to being at 8500 feet and the fact that it’s propane fueled and won’t start when the temperature is below 50 degrees, but I prefer to stay with the original fuel. If bypassing the regulator mounted in the unit enables the generator to start, I will order a replacement regulator from you if they are available.
    Thanks,
    David Humphrey

      David,

Thank you for your inquiry. Winco would not recommend modifying the original design of the unit. There are a a few things to check in order for the unit to operate properly again. First you want to do a complete engine maintenance including adjusting the valves. I’m adding the “valve adjustment guide” to your model’s download section. You then want to examine the demand regulator on the unit. The demand regulator diaphragm can become brittle over time and I have also heard of critters crawling into the demand regulators as well. Finally you could add an engine oil heater kit and battery heater to aid in cold weather operation. Please feel free to contact our Service Department to purchase parts or for additional support as necessary.
